History

At Beighton Nursery Infant School we aim to provide children with a fully inclusive curriculum which celebrates cultural diversity, as well as celebrating children’s own cultures and beliefs. We aim to fulfil the requirements of the Early Years Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum, providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of historical concepts, knowledge and skills; and developing a love for history by children becoming young historians themselves.

The history curriculum at Beighton draws from and makes full use of the immediate and wider local area, enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality. This begins in Early Years, where children learn about their own family, school and community and develops through KS1 to develop an understanding of the history of Beighton and Sheffield.

History topics are informed by the national curriculum and are sensitive to children’s interests and experiences, as well as taking into account the context of the local area. The history curriculum at Beighton is carefully planned and structured to ensure that current learning is linked to previous learning and that the school’s approaches are informed by current pedagogy.
