Geography

At Beighton we seek to understand about people, places and the world around us and because of this we place geographical education at the heart of our curriculum. As a nursery and infant school, Geography is embedded into our curriculum right from the start with crucial aspects of Geography covered within an area of learning called ‘Understanding the World’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. This is the curriculum for our Nursery and Reception children.  In Key Stage One we teach from the National Curriculum for Geography which builds on the children’s learning experiences in a progressive way. Geography topics are on-going in the Early Years and in KS1 it is taught in three to four week blocks each half term.

Children experience Geography each day as they learn to interact with others, make sense of the world and move about within it. We are fortunate that our school is in a rich environment with many diverse geographical features within a short walk. Our aim is to get children out exploring in the local environment as much as possible to provide them with meaningful experiences and opportunities that will enable them to use geographical skills.
